There's an article in the The Islander about microchipping little penguins at one of the colony sites on Australia's Kangaroo Island.  The project seems to have been driven by the tourism industry in an effort to understand more about the birds.  The value of the birds to the local economy is obviously appreciated with a value of $1,500 per bird given.

The Islander article refers to the Kingscote colony that I manage and all of the birds micro chipped were chicks.
For the year 2009 no approval was given to micro chip chicks but approval was given (by DEH) to micro chip adults but i refused permission for this to happen withing the colony as the adults had been badly stressed by vanderlism where boxes were overturned, eggs smashed and birds killed.
